DOTA Hero Spotlight – Dirge Undying Strategy Guide
Dirge Undying (Scourge)
Considered to be an exceptionally filthy and despicable specimen by all who encounter him, including his fellow zombies, Dirge has wandered in from the wastes outside to serve the Lich King in hopes of finally obtaining a place of acceptance amongst the Undead masses. While he is still considered to be unpleasant as ever by the rest of the Scourge, his horrifying abilities, which include raising self-replicating lesser ghouls and spreading vile, rapidly communicable plague throughout the enemy ranks, are unquestionably powerful and may just give the Scourge the edge they need to complete their unholy conquest once and for all.
Comment:
I find the Dirge likeable when he first appeared in version 6.44. Together with his army of zombies, he can push the lane easily while teamates are out hero hunting. Currently, Raise Dead has been replaced with TombStone which zombies will be summoned around the tombstone. Dirge was nerfed to make the game balanced, probably due to complaints that Dirge is an imba character.
Skills (version 6.59d)
![]()
- Decay
Dirge saps away the strength of enemy heroes and retains it for a period of time. - Soul Rip
Redirects the flow of living energy through a target friend or foe, damaging them or healing them depending on how many units are near it. 25 for each unit. - Tomb Stone
Unholy powers summon a cursed tombstone. Zombies will frequently spawn near each enemy unit and attack them. Zombies have a passive that additively slow their target by 7%. Zombies cannot be controlled. - Flesh Golem
Dirge’s hatred for all living beings allows him to transform into a monster. While he’s transformed he carries a plague that affects nearby enemy units. Strength of the plague depends on how close the enemy is. Amplifies damage enemy units receive and reduces their movement speed. When a plagued unit dies, its essence is transfered back to the Undying, healing it for 12(3)%* of its maximum life. Lasts 30 seconds.

Description We max out Decay first to maximize its CD, DUR, and MAG DMG. We put a point into Soul Rip used for light healing. Also putting a point into Tombstone for a general AoE slow and for Soul Ripping purposes. We get Flesh Golem at its respective levels to take advantage of its Plague Amplification Aura. We max out Soul Rip second to turn Soul Rip into a full fledged nuke. We max out Tombstone last to increase its DUR and its Death Lust requirement. Notes: |
Item Build
Core Items
Armlet of Mordiggian: cheap and easy to make, in all it’s an awesome item; fills in for Dirge’s lack of IAS, synergizes with Dirge’s Flesh Golem ability.
Phase Boots: cheap and easy to make, greatly enhances mobility (which is useful in both chasing and escaping)
Orchid Malevolence: cheap and easy to make, greatly enhances Dirge’s prowess to spam his spells, fills in for his lack of IAS, its ability synergizes with all of Dirge’s ability as well as those of your fellow teammates.
Luxury Items
Heart of Tarrasque: greatly enhances Dirge’s tanking abilities, synergizes with Dirge’s Flesh Golem ability.
Blade Mail: affordable, increases Dirge’s potential DMG output when he tanks, synergizes with Dirge’s Flesh Golem ability
Horrible Items
DPS Items: Dirge is not meant to be a DPS hero, look at his AGI base and growth if you want further proof. Buying DPS items (except for Armlet of Mordiggian and Orchid Malevolence) would both waste your inventory space and your gold.
Orb Effect Items : See “DPS Items”.
