Atlantica Online Basic Formation Guide

So you already have your mercenaries ready and now what’s next? You can’t go to battle without a strategy so a formation is needed. Basically, you need high vitality mercenaries for the front line to shield the mercenaries with low vitality. But there are some cases where a mercenary with high evasion rate can be a front liner to deal greater damage to the enemy’s main character.

The Cookie Cutter Formation for New Players:

The following section is a cookie cutter build that will allow you to level until at least level 100 without having to replace your mercs. Also, if you are a new player and have no idea how to play, this is a good build to use until you are above level 50 at which point you can start removing these mercs are replacing them with others that are only attainable at higher levels. If you read the above section you will know why I picked these mercs for the early game. This is only a guideline, feel free to deviate from this build as you see fit. I good example of where you may want to deviate from the given build is if you are finding that your ranged main cannot survive in the front up to level 50 (after level 50, you simply cannot keep a ranged main in the front anymore without 2 monks). Also keep in mind, below level 51 you have very little choice in the mercs you can pick anyways.

At the very beginning of the game one of the first things you are going to need to do is pick 3 mercenaries to come with you. At this point in the game you will only be able to pick from Swordsman, Spearman, Archer and Gunner.

If you are a staff user, I suggest you get two spearmen and a gunner and set up your formation as follows (X Marks empty spots in the 3×3 grid formation):

Spear | Spear | X
Gun | Staff M | X

For any other hero, I suggest that you choose two gunners and a Spearman and set up your formation as follows:

Main | Spear | X
Gun | Gun | X

The reason why you want spearmen in the front of your formation instead of Swordsmen is because despite the fact that swordsmen can take a lot more abuse, spearmen can take enough abuse to survive in the front line. Spearmen do a lot more overall damage than swordsmen which means faster kills and thus faster leveling. The bow mercenary is very good for specific tasks, but leveling is not one of them which is why she is not included in this
formation. Guns are pure offense and can hit annoying fliers which is exactly what you want during your journey to level 100. As a special note, while your spearman may by useful in your future high level parties, your gunners will eventually get completely outclassed by better units once your hero reaches level 84 and 96.

At level 10, you will be able to add one more mercenary to your party. Staff should add in another Gunner while all others should add a shaman so your formation looks like this:

All but Staff

Spear | Main | X
Gun | X | X
Gun |Shaman| X

Staff

Spear | Spear | X
Gun | X | X
Gun |StaffM | X

Level 20 Formation

At level 20 you will want to pick another front line fighter. I highly suggest you get a viking since it has very good abilities and despite being a D class mercenary, it can be upgraded to a better merc at level 100 (so he is useful at any level). Just like an axe main, he has the ability to freeze his enemies and make them do nothing. If you really want to though, you could chose another spear, but unless you want to make an AP drain PvP team at some point in the future, it is a waste (if you don’t know what I am talking about, pick Viking). Set up your formation as follows:

All but Staff

Main | Spear | X
Gun |Gun | X
Viking | Shaman | X

Staff

Spear | Spear | X
Gun | Gun | X
Viking |StaffM | X

Level 30 Formation

At level 30, there is no real choice of mercs anymore, but the one that is available to you is very good, Artillery. He hits a lot of targets and his special ability “Deep Insight” shows you the enemies’ HP, lowers their defense, and applies a weak DoT. Once you have him in your formation, you will always want to attack with his Deep Insight ability before any of your other mercs attacks so that they can take advantage of the lowered defenses. If you are a Cannon user, you may want to consider taking another spear instead of Artilleryman since a Cannon main and Artilleryman are virtually the same.

Formation should look like this:

All but Staff
Spear | Main |Viking
Gun | X | X
Artillery | Shaman | Gun

Staff
Spear | Spear | Viking
Gun | X | X
Artillery | Staff | Gun

At level 40 you will want a monk. His abilities to keep you main alive with a passive heal and to protect your mercenaries from negative magic and stuns will prove to be invaluable weather you do PvE or PvP. It is possible to not have a monk in your team and do well in PvE, but for simplicity sake I will say there is no choice to make here. Take a monk!

All but Staff
Spear | Main | Viking
Gun | X | Artillery
Shaman | Gun | Monk

Staff
Spear | Spear | Viking
Gun | X | Artillery
Staff | Gun | Monk

Level 51 Formation

At level 51 you have your first real decision to make, weather you want a witch or a beast tamer. Personally, I prefer BT. While the witch absolutely can own with her meteor strike (which hits all enemies), her ability falls short in the very late game. I find that by the time she casts meteor (the skill that makes her good), most or all of the enemies are already dead. I would only chose witch if I plan on using her in my late game build (For example, I see a lot of players like to use her in the middle position in ABFL to help avoid cannon stun) Finally if you chose witch and have a ranged hero in the front line, you are going to have to get another melee to replace one of your mercs since after level 50 it becomes too dangerous to keep a ranged main in the front line. Beast Trainer also has an AOE ability that is fairly strong early game (not as strong as witch) and even more useless than witch
late game, summon beast. The difference is that a BT can make a great front liner late game simply for its high speed (for an axe user), great regular axe attack, high defense and high HP. I should also mention that at this point if you plan on doing PvP a lot, you may want to keep your 9th and final merc slot empty until level 57 when you can get the Exorcist which is an incredibly powerful PvP merc because of its ability to prevent the entire opposition’s team from casting magic. Then again, you could just replace another one of your mercs with him once you get to level 57 anyways.

All but Staff *BT*
Spear | Main | Viking
Gun | Artillery | Gun
Shaman | BT | Monk

Staff *BT*
Spear | Spear | Viking
Gun | Artillery | Gun
Staff | BT | Monk

In the case of a non staff formation, you will eventually want to switch the positions of your BT and Main so that the BT is in the front and your main is in the middle or preferably back. You can easily use the formation given here to level you the rest of the way from 50 to 100 (like if you just want to get to 100 for a Maniac). After level 50 you start having access to mercenaries with specialized talents that will help you if used properly. Unlike level 1 where you only had access to 4 mercenaries, you will have access to about 21 at level 100.

If you don’t have much in game money to spend or if you want to just level your mercs and not worry about formations or PvP until you are very high level (100+), I suggest that you simply replace a gunner with an Inventor at level 84 and the other Gunner with a Janissary at level 96. If you know for sure that you don’t want to do PvP and are not a staff main, you may want to consider replacing your Shaman with an Oracle at level 76. Finally, if you know you may want to do PvP, you will want to consider replacing one of your Spearman with an Excorcist when you hit level 57.

On the other hand, if you want to get into PvP as fast as possible or know what kind of formation you want late game, level 50 is the time you have to decide what you want since this is the time you will start to replace your mercenaries with new ones. The amounts of alternative PvE formations and especially PvP formations is beyond the scope of this guide. In other words, there is no simple answer from here on out. Study the good points and bad points of every mercenary well and always run your formation past some other (preferably veteran) players first before you start replacing mercenaries.
